Enjoying the Trails

Rental of the Snorkeling Pack can be arranged with the Grand Isle Resort & Spa. The Snorkeling Pack includes some of the best snorkeling equipment on the market: a low volume silicone mask, easy to clear low-profile snorkel, comfortable full-foot fins, a snorkeling vest, and a waterproof fish ID card. It even includes a signature Grand Isle rash guard for protection from the sun during your snorkeling adventure.

If you are new to snorkeling or if it’s been awhile, we suggest you try your snorkel gear in the pool. When ready, venture out to the Grand Isle Reef Trail off Emerald Bay Beach. Prepare your equipment while on the beach and wade out into the water. Standing in water up to just above your knees, put your mask on and lean on your partner until you both can put your fins on. Gently lay down in the water and get comfortable looking through your mask and breathing through your snorkel. Once relaxed, slowly start kicking out to the nearest surface ball.

What to See

The coral heads and reefs that comprise the trails are ideal for easy shallow water snorkeling adventures. You will see juvenile and adult species of Caribbean reef fishes as well many different types of coral and even an occasional sea turtle or lobster. Each time you visit the trails you should see more and different fish. Gently and slowly snorkel around each coral head and reef system and look closely on the top, sides, and bottom of each coral head and ledge. The visibility will generally increase as you explore further from shore but please do not go beyond the outermost buoy. Remember it is not a race, and do not swim out farther than your comfort level.

Look But Please Don’t Touch. There are many creatures and formations to see while snorkeling on the trail. To avoid an unpleasant experience with a sea critter or the coral, it is always best to just look and not touch. Poking, prodding and touching the coral, even with a gloved hand, can damage or kill the coral and can cause discomfort to the snorkeler.

When to Go
It is best to enjoy the trails when the tide is high and the wave action is low. Morning to early afternoon is typically a good time. It also best to enjoy the trails with a friend or buddy. Not only is it more fun to share the adventure with someone, it is a good idea just in case either of you need a little help.

If You Get Tired
First, don’t do too much. If you find you are tired while snorkeling stop moving, put some air in your snorkeling vest and rest until you are refreshed, then make your way back to the beach.

Fun In the Sun
Be sure to have some sort of sun protection during your snorkeling adventure. Wearing your Grand Isle Rash Guard, and waterproof sun block on your legs is the least amount of protection you should have from the sun while snorkeling.  Avoid sun block on your face during snorkeling, asit can get in your eyes and inside your mask and make for an uncomfortable experience.
